Brazilian Portuguese

Falamos Português Brasileiro!

We at the Modern Language Institute use an active and functional method to teach Portuguese. The method is suitable for students from any nationality above the age of 13 and doesn’t require any prior knowledge of the language. It helps the beginner to speak, read and write in Portuguese at an intermediate level of proficiency and also allows the continuation into more advanced levels of learning.

Learning a second language requires the mind of an adult to create “word files,” and develop an understanding of the “unique logic” of the new language. Adults who fail to recognize the various patterns of this “unique logic,” will tend to translate directly from their mother tongue in their initial attempts to speak in their new language.

Young children, on the other hand, possess the phenomenal ability to learn language automatically. This is due, in part, to the absence of a pre-existing “word file” or any prior “language logic.” Although it is impossible to erase firmly ingrained patterns that already exist in the mind of the adult learner, it is possible to teach the older student to adapt to the “unique logic” of a second language spontaneously.

The method utilized by the Modern Language Institute is one that encourages the students to think in their newly acquired language immediately. This enables the student to assimilate the “unique logic” of the new language in much the way that a child would absorb the same information. This method also allows the student to begin communicating quickly, which is the essential element of the functional approach.

Characteristics
In order to develop the student’s oral and written communication skills the method adopts the following sequence: to listen/see – to understand – to speak – to read – and to write. As the emphasis is on oral communication, it seeks to present the most common expressions and sentences used in situations of everyday life, in a familiar, social or professional setting. In the same way, the vocabulary used is commonly found in conversations between native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. There is great variety of exercises, which, among other things, intend to teach grammar in a simple and concise way. In the classroom, the method integrates traditional and innovative resources.

The workbook is meant to help the students to practice grammar structures and the vocabulary of the textbook. Also, it accelerates the development of fluency.

Objectives
– To teach students basic functional grammar structures and vocabulary. This will allow them to start communicating right from the start.
– To make it possible for students to have a consistent understanding of the grammatical base.
– To expose students to great number of exercises. This will consolidate grammar structures and develop oral and written expressions.
– To introduce foreign students to the cultural, historical and geographical aspects of Brazil by means of texts that are appropriate to their level of learning.
– To put the students in touch with texts and recorded exercises which offer not only alternative learning resources but also to make it possible for them to listen to different accents and regional expressions.

Levels and certificates
This course prepares students to take any international exam at elementary or certificate level. The method complies completely with the objectives of the International Certificate Conference (ICC).
